It may take a special type of individual to become a court reporter as it requires not only technical skills using the stenograph machine, but it also requires strong leadership skills such as the ability to conduct themselves in a business manner, maintaining neutrality and and confidentiality of cases they transcribe, providing an accurate transcript record, and exceptional organizational skills .  The court reporters possess abilities and certain attributes that make them good at what they're doing.

Punctuality

Punctuality - When there is a court reporter given a mission, the court reporters will show up at least thirty minutes early at the job location to prepare for the court reporting job.  Those in the court reporting industry understand that punctuality makes them beneficial to customers.

Confidentiality

Another key criteria that court reporters must abide by is confidentiality.  As court reporters are involved with many various kinds of legal actions, they must maintain the confidentiality of the cause and keep everything that is discussed private.  Often times the testimony that's being recorded is confidential and contains very sensitive information. The best court reporters understand that info heard in a proceeding isn't to be repeated elsewhere.  

Neutrality

As officials of the court, when working on cases, court reporters must maintain neutrality and not choose sides during the case.  Upon hearing testimony, they don't share their opinions about the case. The best court reporters simply record what's spoken. They do not enter into contracts for services.

The court reporters are acquainted with and use business etiquette and good manners. They understand how to introduce individuals in a situation where parties don't know each other. They're always on time. The court reporters dress for a company setting.

Grammar, Punctuation and Proofreading

Court colleagues make a transcript of the spoken word. When a witness speaks, she or he doesn't provide punctuation. Assertiveness

During a proceedings, the court reporter will sit, listen, and record the word. The best court reporters know when to stop a proceedings to ask a witness to talk louder. They don't hesitate to make requests from parties when necessary, like asking for spellings of names, cities or streets mentioned in the proceedings at the end of the deposition.

Organizational Skills

Most court reporters work independently and possess a large amount of control over their very own schedule and work load. They have to balance many activities effectively. Organizational skills are needed to be able to handle witnesses and exhibits during a proceeding.
